MaxScript nodes take a long time to execute?

One of my scenes took quite a long time to submit to backburner and i was wondering why.
I began looking into the MaxScript node, since we made our own iterator and noticed that even if we didn't really do anything in the MaxScript node it would take a really long time to execute.

So as a small experiment I tried executing the vexus graph without the MaxScript node, which takes around 0.1 seconds.
I then added a blank MaxScript node after the Objects by Layer Name, and I made sure to check Select input/output on the maxscript node, and when executing the entire graph the time is now 76.9 seconds.

Why does it take so long much longer to execute MaxScript nodes and is there any way to speed it up?
